Nas, American rapper rooted in East Coast hip-hop, is regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time. The son of jazz musician Olu Dara. He grew up in Queens where he started writing stories and rap lyrics about his inner-city life. In 1990 he became a prominent voice of East Coast hip-hop. His 1994 debut album, Illmatic, was acclaimed for it’s realism and lyricism.
